Unbrand

Oh look, a blog. What to fill it with. Well here’s a thought I just had, that’s just ever s slightly too long to fit into a tweet.

Why do film production/distribution companies bother to advertise at all?

It makes absolutely no sense. I’m not a fan of the films of the Acme Film Co. In this space, content is absolutely the king. When I go and see a film, I go on the strength of the director, the premise or occasionally the leading actors.

If a film is poor, branding Acme all over the front surely damages the brand. On the other hand, if a film is great – I don’t find myself thinking “ah, that Acme have another fantastic hit on their hands!” No. I think “Tarantino, you old dog, you’ve done it again…”

Is it time for monolithic money-spinners to realise that they should stick to the background, where the belong?

I don’t know. I do enjoy a Focus Features film.

I see your point particularly to the major labels, but in a way they can often prove to be a useful way of pigeonholing the kind of director/film you might decide to go and see whilst munching on your popcorn during the trailers.

Almost like music genres can pigeonhole artists so that if you’re not a fan of say Damien Rice, you’re also not likely to be a fan of Iron & Wine (This is clearly objective still).

Whether or not you like this form of consumer led direction – it usually helps initially to define creative projects so you know that a if a film adaption of your favourite comic book hero was produced by Sony Classics rather than Warner Bros. – you’re probably not gonna expect to see the shit loads of explosions and over the top CGI you may/may not have hoped for.
